Piyo Piyo – a Study of Geometry and Movement
About
‘Piyo Piyo’ was a study of geometry and perspective, combining three of my interests; japanese culture, pattern design and motion graphics. “Piyo Piyo” is the sound of a bird chirping in japanese.
Paper Prototype
At first, I created a paper prototype of the origami bird to map out the sections in which the bird was folded and the step-by-step folding sequence. This also guided me in which axis I should rotate the sections on for each step of the folding process.
From 2D to 3D
As a graphic designer, I usually work with just two dimensions (in theory), which also means that I don’t mold 3D models like an animator would. Instead, I made the “origami paper” as 2D vector sections in Adobe Illustrator. I didn’t add a third dimension until I started manipulating my vectors in Adobe After Effects.
Origami Paper
The origami paper was made by cutting a square vector into sections (middle body, tail tip, tail middle, beak tip…). Afterwards, I applied my hexagon pattern which I also created in Illustrator using the pattern tool.
The pattern design has geometric elements and flowers which are typical to origami paper.
