Immersive Mirror for Therapy

About
As part of my first semester at Digital Concept Development, I developed a concept for an AR-based smart mirror designed for yoga and mindfulness practice at home. Smart mirrors for fitness purposes have existed for many years, but the goal for this concept was to create a calm, supportive experience for people who struggle with anxiety or depression and find it difficult to leave their homes.

Rather than focusing on self-tracking and performance data, the concept centres on emotional support and encouragement. Inspired by products such as Wii Fit and EyeToy Play, the mirror offers gentle guidance, posture cues and short motivational messages that help users feel seen, supported and capable, without pressure – if the user would like it.

Using AR, the mirror can place the user in soft, immersive environments such as a forest, by the sea or near a waterfall. The background can slowly evolve during a session, for example flowers growing, light shifting or the sun rising, to reinforce a sense of progress and calm. Real-time form directions can be enabled if the user wants it, but the experience is always designed to feel like a caring companion rather than a measuring tool.

Safe space
What sets this concept apart is the conscious decision to remove comparison, performance statistics and reminders about session “streaks” or interval. Instead of measuring or judging the user, the mirror is designed to protect self-worth and the feeling of a safe space, ensuring the experience never feels discouraging, shameful or overwhelming.
